Building Civil Society Movements: Strategic Nonviolent Activism and Advocacy (May 4 - 12, 2015)

Learn how to build successful social change coalitions and civil society movements to raise awareness about important issues of justice and conflict. Discuss how to balance power between groups so that negotiations can be more successful in addressing the root problems of a conflict. Use negotiation, mediation, and dialogue to structure democratic decision-making and strategic planning processes. Use real world case studies to practice designing strategic nonviolent advocacy and civil resistance movements.

This course stresses the need to focus on non-adversarial, relationship-based approaches found in the field of conflict transformation. Participants will learn to reflect critically on social movements, identify the relevance of conflict transformation processes in building social movements, and learn to identify appropriate tactics in diverse contexts.
