Description

FIELD RESEARCHER/COORDINATORS, NIGERIA

Description

The Nexus Fund, an organization dedicated to building and strengthening the global community to end mass violence against civilians, is seeking multiple field researcher/coordinators located throughout Nigeria with 7-15 years of experience to serve as consultants in Nigeria for a minimum of 4 months.

The mission of The Nexus Fund is to provide connections, opportunities, and resources that are specifically identified as pressing needs by those working on the frontlines of mass violence prevention. In this role, Nexus seeks to close the local-to-international divide by serving as interlocutor between civil society organizations (CSOs) on the ground and diverse international actors. The goal of this effort is to facilitate more effective and locally driven prevention and response efforts. This can be an especially critical role when a country is at risk of escalating violence and multiple actors are attempting at the same time to learn where resources would best be placed to meet civil society’s needs for both prevention of and response to mass violence.

In Nigeria, civil society is vibrant and many funders have made investments in supporting local efforts to build a more peaceful society. However, should the risk of mass violence against civilians escalate, foreign policy-makers and donors lack the knowledge and understanding to assess civil society needs and capacity, and to connect with local actors for coordinated prevention and response. Nexus’s field consultants will help bridge this gap through outreach and relationship-building.

Successful candidates will be able to work alone, and potentially to manage one other person.

Duties

  • Research and build relationships with key CSOs at various levels in key locations around the country
  • Analyze and map the capacity, needs, and skills of CSOs in Nigeria working on issues related to the prevention of mass violence against civilians (such as peacebuilding and human rights) in order to provide this information to international actors seeking to engage and support local efforts, or whose efforts could benefit from this knowledge

  • Map existing and potential donors supporting mass violence prevention and related issues in Nigeria, and serve as matchmaker between funders and individual grantees as needed
  • Seek out grassroots organizations, civil society leaders, and individual activists who are not the traditional recipients of grants, but whose work can contribute to atrocity prevention and warrants more support and resources; and think creatively about how these organizations can be supported by international actors and donors
